What an offering expresses
Offerings at Ajmer Sharif are associated with love, gratitude and service. One visitor may bring flowers; another may wish to share food or request prayers for family. The scale of an offering need not become a measure of devotion.
This guide explains the vocabulary and the practical questions involved. It is not a price list or checkout. Its purpose is to help you describe your wishes clearly and understand what someone has agreed to arrange.
Chadar, flowers and fragrance
A chadar is a cloth covering presented reverently at the shrine. Roses, petals, attar, incense and sweets are also part of these devotional offerings. Incredible India describes the chadars and roses associated with the shrine.
Ask about the cloth, size, flowers, presentation time and total amount. If attending personally, establish where to meet; if someone is arranging it on your behalf, put your request in writing. Check the spelling of any family names you want included.
Deg, langar and tabarruk
A deg is a large cooking vessel; langar means the arrangement for sharing food. The words are connected but not interchangeable. The Dargah’s large and small cauldrons are associated with communal food preparation; Incredible India attributes them to Akbar and Jahangir respectively.
Specify whether you mean a whole cauldron, a contribution to a shared arrangement or meals for a particular number of people. Establish the food, quantity, preparation, distribution and any service costs. The word “deg” alone does not define all those details.
Tabarruk is a devotional term for something received with an association of blessing. When food is shared, consider the order of distribution, other people’s portions and avoiding waste. Availability on a particular day should not be assumed.
Nazar-o-niyaz, Fatiha and dua
Nazar-o-niyaz expresses devotional offerings, often accompanied by dua and Fatiha. Fatiha concerns Qur’anic recitation and prayer; dua is supplication to Allah. Make clear whether your enquiry is about prayer alone or also involves food, cloth or another arrangement.
Families may use these terms somewhat differently. Seek guidance from a trusted religious scholar for a particular vow or religious ruling. An offering should not be understood as a guaranteed medical cure or a promise of a particular personal outcome.
Agreeing on a complete arrangement
- Purpose: Describe the offering and whether you will be present.
- Timing: Give your preferred date, flexibility and any connection with Urs.
- Details: Ask what items or quantity of food are included and how distribution works.
- Total: Request the amount including service, delivery or other charges in writing.
- Acknowledgement: Agree on a receipt or written confirmation and what happens if arrangements change.
If requesting photographs or video, ask whether permission and practical conditions allow them. Other people’s privacy during worship should be respected.
